A huge hail storm dropped up to four feet of ice in one small area of Denver on Thursday, June 4, 2015.
The hail that pounded all the areas between Dakota and Alaska Street, from 10pm and 11:30pm. The hail storm turned S. Irving St. into a gigantic pile of packed hailstones that engulfed several cars, and cars were not able to get past the pile of hailstones.
Removing the hailstones required snowplows and a tractor to remove the hail on Friday morning. The hail removed filled up over 30 dump trucks.
This type of hail event is very rare, but there is an actual meterologic explanation. This type of hail event is called “plowable hail.”
Cari Bowen, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder said, “the term was created following scientific studies about similar weather events around the country.” “It’s a very interesting phenomenon,” Bowen said. “We saw the storm stall. It produced copious amounts of hail in one small area. It’s a meteorological thing.”
